Information on Backpacks

Packs used for traveling are a bit different from packs used for hiking -- they tend to be larger, heavier, and sturdier. This is because they need to withstand being tossed around by airport baggage handlers. They are often quite large because they have to hold all the travelers goods. On the other hand, the packs used for hiking can be smaller and lighter. Backpackers carry less weight than most travelers, and they handle their packs a lot more gently.

A lot depends on the length of your backpacking trips. A good weekender pack will probably not work as well for a ten day expedition. Much also depends on whether you're travelling alone or in a group. When you travel in a group, each person ends up carrying a bit less weight. Another factor for longer trips is how frequently you'll be able to resupply. If you're hiking a section of the Appalachian Trail, it's pretty easy to get into town from almost any major road crossing, and you cross major roads every couple of days. On the other hand, if you're in the middle of the northern Ontario wilderness, resupplying can pose considerable logistical problems, and you may be forced to carry a lot more food with you even for shorter trips.

It is also worth your while to discuss your needs with your local outfitter. Most of the better outfitters can give you excellent advice -- the folks who work at such places are experienced backpackers who have actually field tested the stuff they sell. Read the reviews in the major outdoor magazines, like Backpacker and Outside!

Once you have determined your needs, you can choose from a fairly broad range of high quality brands. I will give you a short list of the better brands -- for the most part, these companies categorize there packs according to type (internal frame vs external frame) and intended use. Do your research, and then browse through the list.

Word of advice: The packs designed for longer trips (7 - 10 days, e.g.) are designed to carry all the supplies that you'd need for a trip of that length. If you'll be able to resupply every 2 or 3 days, then you'll only need a pack good for 2-3 days.

There are many long-distance hikers who go with ultra light equipment, carrying no more than 20 lbs in a very light and relatively small pack (less than a pound, around 2400 cubic inches). But it takes pretty specialized equipment to go the ultra light route, and it's difficult to pull it off in cooler weather because of the bulk of the warmer clothes that you'll need. And even a 2400 cubic inch pack will be larger than you'll need for most day hikes.

A lot also depends on the kind of day hiking and long weekend trips you have in mind. A day hike in the White Mountains or the High Peaks of the Adirondacks will require more equipment than a trip in lower elevations where you're less likely to run into extremes of weather and temperature over the course of the day.

Use a small fanny pack for day hikes in the NY-NJ region, but in the higher elevations of New England and the Adirondacks, use a 2000 cubic inch pack to carry the warmer clothes you will need as you ascend to the higher elevations. And for 3-4 day hikes, use a frame pack (6+ lbs, 5000+ cubic inches) and carry enough amenities to make a comfortable camp. On the other hand, when you are out for 8-10 days of Appalachian Trail hiking, use a smaller ultra light pack (1.5 lbs, 3400+ cubic inches) and skimp on some of the camp comforts in favor of making hiking as comfortable as possible.

Strategic Alliances to Increase Market Share

Increase Market Share

Few, are the businesses that do not desire to increase their market share. Unfortunately, very few know how to achieve this lofty goal. Below are a number of ideas that should prompt your thinking in areas of developing strategic alliances to increase your market share.

Co-branding such as snack manufacturers who are now mixing two nationally known names and logos on a single product. Examples of this are Betty Crockers' Soda-Licious, soda pop fruit snacks, made with 7UP and 7UP Cherry. Also, is the popular milk chocolate-covered Pretzel Flipz by Nestl? featuring Rold Gold pretzels. In other market segments examples are Crest toothpaste with Scope mouthwash included. At Ford, they co-brand both with Eddie Bauer and Harley Davidson.

You can gain access to new markets both domestic and international. Copeland Corporation joined with the largest compressor manufacturer in India, Kirloskar, to bring air conditioning to a growing middle class in that country.

You will find that partnering can provide the benefit of positioning for future needs not yet known to you or your industry. An example, a lead-user firm is one whose present needs will reflect its segment's needs in future months or years. Through partnering, one company can assist another in leapfrogging current industry leaders. Cooperating with newer firms more willing to pursue a riskier development strategy to gain market shares does this. This strategy can aid companies, large and small, in more rapidly and efficiently reaching their collective goals.

Additional business to justify operating a production facility. In developing strategic alliances with competitors, you might do the production for both. This is similar to retailers that have a store brand developed by the recognized national brand manufacturer.

Opportunity to develop a private labeling or branding identity. American Dental Cooperative, a distributor in Nashville, TN has been successful in this area as has Power Heavy Duty in the heavy-duty truck repair industry.

Sales lead and help in procuring new business. Brian Potts, a VP at 3M recently made this offer to his strategic building service contractor customers at their CEO retreat in Mexico. He detailed how other 3M divisions are most likely are selling the customers that the contractors seek and how they could take advantage of those already established relationships.

Opportunity to expand business with new or related product innovations and service offerings. Helen Chavez at La Tapatia Tortilleria partnered with a competitor to serve a large grocery store chain in California and ended up double dipping for her effort.

Preferred supplier status as Steelcase in Grand Rapids, MI, awards to suppliers that have proven their performance abilities. These suppliers have to earn their way to the top of the chart, and when they do they receive the benefits of being a preferred supplier.

You can reduce direct competition as achieved by the Sun/IBM alliance has created the Java operating system to keep Microsoft at bay.

To gain market share, Lexus and Coach, the New York-headquartered manufacturer of fine leather products teamed up in an exclusive partnership to produce the Limited Lexus ES 300 Coach Edition.

Geographic expansion is what happened to Ronald Fink?s West Palm Beach, FL company, RGF Environmental Group, following a trip to Asia with other local CEOs and Ray Reddish, a senior management analyst at Florida?s commerce department. Within 18 months of his trip he had hired 14 new employees just to handle his Pacific Rim business. Some states aggressively partner with local manufacturers to expand exporting there by increasing state revenue.

Create marketing synergism to the consumer through cross promotion like Blockbuster and Dominos did. Blockbuster held a promotion that required a customer to rent three movies and in return receive a $10 savings book for Dominos Pizza. Both partners received increased traffic through the joint promotion. This can easily be done at the local level between, as an example, the drug store and the dry cleaners.

Barriers to market entry by a new player; this protects the current players as did two telephone companies in the greater Los Angeles area. They partnered to serve UCLA in a method that closed an opportunity to a new provider attempting to enter their market.

Marketing assistance to support order volume for products as when a small company develops an alliance with a large company. This is common in the pharmaceuticals industry.

Your imagination and ability to implement are your only true obstacles.

The Best Indian Restaurant in London is easily The Bombay Brasserie in South Kensington and it is in it's own class.

It belongs to the 5 Star Hotel Chain called The Taj Group, which is owned by India's largest and oldest vehicle manufacturer - TATA.

Tata who also recently bought the Jaguar car company opened The Bombay Brasserie in 1982 - which is also by pure coincidence the year that I got married Alas !

This restaurant is extremely popular with Indian and English Clients and the Eat As Much Gourmet Food As You Like Sunday Lunch is only ?20, which is a bargain by all counts for a 5-Course Deluxe Meal.

There is a soup as an aperitif, this I usually miss, so that I have plenty of room in my belly for the rest of the scrumptious delights.

To begin with there is a huge range of starters, too many to put here, but the Pani Puri deserves a mention as it is Pure Traditional Indian Food and not available elsewhere in the UK.

A good selection of Fish, Fowl, Meat and Vegetarian Main Course Dishes ensue with rice and Freshly Baked Bread.

Then there are usually three or four sweet dishes, if you still have space you may follow with Western Coffee or Indian Tea to round off your Perfect Indian Meal.

Now that's not bad for ?20 you must admit.

Furthermore you get the nice sedate atmosphere, that only a quality restaurant can give you and the ambience has always been great on the many times that I have been there in the last twenty plus years.

It's a Good Choice whoever you are trying to impress and the Service is more than acceptable, though I would not shout about it - deliberately understated I think.

You may be interested in reading what the London Evening Standard has to say about my favourite Indian Restaurant.

It's Top Food Critic wrote the following:

Back in 1982, The Bombay Brasserie brought with it a sweep of grandeur and an intelligible interpretation of the regionality of Indian cooking and at a stroke altered the preconceptions of a cuisine that had long been immured in yards of flock wallpaper and all purpose sauces.

Well if you are convinced, then pick up your telephone, and give them a call now - and find out what you have been missing for all this time, or you will never know, will you ?

HOLIDAY SHOPPING OR ANY OTHER TIME ONLINE SHOPPING IS HERE TO STAY

THE PROBLEM: O.K., part of the excitement of holiday shopping is fighting bad weather, sneaking into that last parking spot, feeling like a sardine as you are pancaked in the mall, not finding those perfect gifts and settling for an almost perfect gift, rude sales clerks, $5 for cold chop suey, or was it a taco, or maybe some weird health food dish mistakenly purchased in the wrong line ... - well perhaps excitement is not the right word for it. There may be a solution that would avoid all of the above!

THE SOLUTION: What about a mall that is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week; no crowds, no lines, no waiting; virtually unlimited selection; salesclerks can always find your requests (that are not rude); the ability to find auto accessories, baby gifts. computers, personalized gifts, home improvement items, coffee, cool food items, toys, video games, sporting goods, jewelry, --- all from the same comfy computer chair. Most traditional retail stores understand the power and future of the internet and have made their products available online. Some even have web-only specials.

THE PLAYERS: Companies such as Wal*Mart, Service Merchandise, Starbucks, Office Max, Blockbuster, eBay, Hickory Farms, Bits and Pieces, My Twinn, Omaha Steaks, NBA Store, Shutterfly, Lenox, Franklin Mint, Rubbermaid, Bombay Company, Bass Pro Shops, Pet Care Central, Amazon, All Posters, Charles Tyrwhitt, Jos. A Bank, Florsheim, Dunham's Sports, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Radisson Hotels, The Shopping Channel, Dickie's, Columbia house, Road Runner Sports, Dell Systems, CHEFS, NetFlix, Diamonds International, Disney Movie Club, Christianbook, and many others have very aggressive internet marketing departments. All of this without ever having to spend a penny on gas!

THE DELIVERY: With the improvement of shipping efficiency by companies such as UPS, FedEx and DHL, even regular shipping for items are normally 2-3 days. Since most last-minute shopping is caused by not being able to find the time to get to the mall, receiving the items in time from an online purchase should be a piece of cake. Another idea could be to have the item directly shipped to Uncle Bob and Aunt Jane to avoid the additional headache of getting to the post office and paying additional much needed funds to get the present there on time.

THE SECURITY SOLUTION: There has certainly been a great deal of publicity about security issues for internet shoppers. A few small but important considerations should reduce many security/privacy concerns: making sure the actual purchasing site (where your credit card information is requested) shows up as https, making sure the company is registered with a security company such as VeriSign or Thawte, and dealing with reputable retailers. Most online sites accept all major credit cards. Some accept PayPal, Google Checkout, and online checks. All of these options are designed to improve your online shopping experience.

THE REWARD: So during this holiday season, remember the real reason for the season: celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and spend more time with your family (and save money on gas and gifts by onlining your shopping experience!).

Find hundreds of gifts ideas from the above online merchants and many more (new companies added weekly) at http://www.virtualmallcity.com.

Choosing The Right Knee Brace

Knee braces - also known as knee supports and knee pads - are used primarily as protective gear to address several physical conditions and prevent knee-related problems. These braces are a prominent fixture in sports medicine, particularly with injured athletes. Some sports medicine experts classify knee braces into two simple categories. Functional knee braces are used by patients with an ACL tear, damaged ligaments or other injuries to substitute for the injured body part. Individuals using these braces are able to continue doing some activities without requiring surgery. Although functional braces will never be a perfect or permanent replacement to normal ligaments, they definitely offer adequate protection in low-load situations, giving the knee greater stability compared to having no braces at all.

1. Consult Your Doctor

One who is considering wearing a functional knee brace should consult with a doctor. The decision to use the brace would depend on the particular ligament injured, the sport the individual plays, rehabilitation work taken, and other factors. An injured athlete must realize that strengthening, physical therapy and rehabilitation are more important than using a knee brace, which may help prevent a re-injury but not hasten or contribute much to the recovery or healing process.

On the other hand, prophylactic knee braces are more of a preventive measure for healthy athletes. However, research has yielded unclear results if such a brace prevents knee injuries. Although some athletes using prophylactic braces have shown lower MCL tears, other factors have also contributed to injury risk reduction. These factors include the kind of sport played and conditioning, position and other player attributes.

Apprehension has also emerged over the possibility that a prophylactic brace may actually be a hindrance to knee movement and even increase the likelihood of injury. Research shows that this is not the case, as long as the knee brace is correctly fitted and firmly in place.

2. Commercial Knee Braces

The Futuro Knee Support Stabilizing Large is one of several knee braces available in the market. The brace is designed to give athletes or individuals with weakened tendons, muscles or ligaments stable and comfortable support and prevent any re-injury. The Futuro can also be worn the whole day or when the user feels discomfort in doing some activities. The brace also does not hinder movement even as the knee is stabilized.

Magnetic therapy is integrated into Magnetic Wave Knee Support. This brace comes in small/medium and large/extra large sizes and features 12 magnets spread strategically in the neoprene material. The HoMedics knee support also applies heat therapy and cold therapy for aches, sprains and other injuries. The brace also fits the user securely with loop closures and a hook.

The single-size Mueller Sport Care Knee Support Open Patella is used for arthritic knees and minor strains and sprains. The support is made from a soft neoprene blend that enables body heat retention to relieve pain and help maintain knee flexibility. The support is also designed with an open patella, adjustable straps, stretch nylon, and trimmed, smooth edges to ensure a comfortable fit, prevent chafing and easy wear and removal.

3. Knee Braces With Specific Applications

- Arthritic knee braces are made for individuals with arthritis
- Tese braces are also called unloader braces
- These are designed to eliminate pressure on knee joints
- Post-operative braces are designed to immobilize knee joints after an injury or surgery
- Magnetic knee braces work on the assumption that magnetic fields promote various health benefits
- Elastic braces are the ideal option, as they adjust to the natural contour of the knee and leg
